09 | Final summary
Let's recap.
The two main approaches to drawing are:
- Observational, where we copy the subject directly,
- Analytical (Constructive), where we break the subject down into simple forms and build it back up on our paper.
💡
As a rule of thumb, we use the former for studying and the latter for drawing from imagination, but both approaches are vital for an artist's balanced growth.
The workflow
New subjects are different only at the surface level.
Because everything is made of form, it can be sketched, constructed and textured using the same workflow:
- Identify and sketch the main forms, to create a foundation.
- Draw linework over your sketch, to achieve likeness with your subject.
- Finish your artwork with accents around the focal point, to tell your own story.
Use references
You can't draw what you don't know, so study the reference to integrate it in your visual library.
Once something is in your visual library, you can modify or combine it with other things to create fantastical drawings from your imagination.
